Middle School (Year 7-10)
Scots College Middle School provides the opportunity for students in Years 7-10 to realise their potential within all areas of College life, while recognising the unique age and stage of each student.
The Middle School at Scots is a place where every student is known. Personalised learning and small class sizes allow us to recognise each students’ learning styles. Quality in all that the students do is expected in a progressive and innovative educational setting where competition and just giving it a go is encouraged, excellence is achieved, and success is rightly acknowledged.
I invite you to visit us to see the difference for yourself.

Curriculum
The Middle Years Programme (MYP) for students aged 11-16 is now offered by over 850 IB World Schools. At Scots, we run the MYP in Years 7-10. The MYP is especially designed to help adolescents adjust to life in the 21st century. It is a difficult time for these young people as they learn to cope with a constantly changing and increasingly interconnected world. The MYP provides them with the knowledge and skills they need as they grow, helping the students to find a sense of belonging.
The culmination of the MYP programme is the Year 10 Community Project. Working in small groups, students are expected to identify a community need and take action to either bring change themselves, raise money to finance change carried out by others, raise awareness of the issue, or provide an analysis of how this issue can be alleviated. Past projects include encouraging healthy eating at Kahurangi School, maintaining bike trails, and starting a beach clean up.
Co-Curricular
In addition to their in-classroom pursuits, Scots College students are encouraged and expected to participate in co-curricular activities. The College provides a range of sporting and cultural options, allowing each student to find something that sparks passion for them.
House System
The House system adds another dimension to life at Scots. The Middle and Senior Schools are divided into eight vertically arranged Houses with students from each Year Level (Years 7-13). Each student becomes a member of a House and works and develops as a member of a closer community structure. Students stay with the same House for their time at Scots, providing continuity and a sense of belonging.
When starting at Scots College Middle School, students will be assigned to one of our eight Houses. There is plenty of good-natured rivalry among the Houses, with fiercely fought competitions in sport, drama, debating, and music. It is good fun and a chance for students to make new friends outside their year group.
Facilities
In addition to the usual range of classroom and laboratory facilities, there is a specialist arts centre, technology spaces, graphics suite, drama suite, and music centre. The College has numerous flexible learning environments suited for both individualised and collaborative group study and teaching. We provide a Careers Centre, Common Rooms for senior students, and a tiered Lecture Theatre. There is also a gymnasium, a weights room, science laboratories, the Creative and Performing Arts Centre, and the Hodge Indoor Sports Centre.
