Pipe Band (Drums)
Tutor: Catrina Berry
Catrina has a wealth of experience in pipe band drumming and almost 10 years of teaching experience. She has played with several Grade 1 Pipe Bands, including City of Wellington and New Zealand Police, and is the current Drum Sergeant of the Grade 2 Wellington Red Hackle Pipe Band.
Catrina has been instrumental in developing the Red Hackle Pipe Band organisation and is now responsible for all aspects of drumming over both the Grade 4 and Grade 2 bands, including drum scores and tuning. Being a part of the Red Hackle leadership team has been a challenging but pleasurable experience for Catrina, who has helped the band develop from a non-competitive Grade 4b band to a successful band in Grade 2. Being part of a pipe band helps develop particular life skills like communication, teamwork, and goal setting, all of which are utilised to achieve the best band performances.
When teaching, Catrina is focussed on delivering a structured programme to enable students to reach their full potential. With a particular emphasise on technique, she aims to pass on her full knowledge of the pipe band idiom and inspire students by showing them the full range of opportunities playing in a pipe band can offer them.
“I am passionate about making the local pipe band scene in Wellington the strongest it can be, and am thankful for the opportunity to work with the Scots College Pipe Band to help them achieve their community and competition goals.”
Outside of drumming, Catrina likes to spend her time with her young family.
