Published March 2025

Scots College has long been a place of inspiration for many of its students, offering experiences that leave a lasting impact. Among its more recent Collegians, former student Manihera Gardiner reflects on his five-year journey at the College, highlighting moments that shaped his personal growth and sense of community.

Manihera’s first day at Scots College in 2020 remains one of his most cherished memories. Arriving as a nervous Year 9 student, he was greeted warmly by the Head Prefect at the time, Mosi (Moses) Moala-Mafi. Mosi’s thoughtful introduction to the new cohort set the tone for a welcoming and supportive environment. By the end of that day, Manihera had formed friendships that endure to this day, laying the foundation for a fulfilling experience at Scots.

Another standout moment in his time at the College was winning the 2023 College Sport Wellington Rugby Premiership. Having been part of an exceptional team comprising of close friends, Manihera recalled the pride they felt after overcoming the disappointment of the 2022 season; “A huge part of that success was due to the dedication of our coaches and the unwavering support we received both on and off the field”. The memories of that triumphant final game are described as unforgettable and emblematic of the spirit of Scots College.

In 2024, the Prefect team organised the Whanaungatanga Week, a school-wide initiative focused on promoting unity and belonging. With activities ranging from Junior School Easter Egg hunts to house relays, the week fostered an inclusive and celebratory atmosphere. Manihera, as Head Prefect, attributed the success of Whanaungatanga Week to the collaborative efforts of the Prefect team, “the week was a great example of what you can achieve when you come together and work as a group towards a common goal – we couldn’t have done it without the support from the 2024 Prefect team!”

After graduating from Scots College, Manihera transitioned to university life, beginning a Bachelor of Building Science with a major in Project Management at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington. His decision to remain in Wellington reflected the deep appreciation for the city cultivated during his time at Scots College. Manihera has embraced the opportunities and diversity of university life, forging friendships with people from around the world. While the change has been a busy one, he looks forward to the next few years of study and plan to visit Scots College to stay connected with the community.

Scots College continues to hold a special place in the hearts of its Collegians, providing a foundation of values, friendships, and achievements that resonate far beyond their time within its walls.
