Great Scots is a Distinguished Alumni Award that recognises the contributions of Scots College Collegians to their professions, communities and alma mater. This award is presented to Graeme John Horsley in recognition of his outstanding career and achievements.
Graeme attended Scots from 1948-1960. In 1956 he was made a Primary School Monitor, and, being a keen sportsman, participated in athletics and swimming gaining his Bronze Medal while at school. Graeme made both the Primary and Secondary First Fifteen rugby teams, taking home the title of ‘Most improved forward’ in 1959 and being made Captain in his final year at Scots.
Graeme’s association with Scots College continued long after he graduated with several members of his family, including sons and grandsons, having attended the College at some stage during their school years. Graeme has also been a long-time supporter of the College’s philanthropic endeavours over the years. He was President of the Old Boys Association in 1981 – 82 and served on the Board of Governors for five years.
Graeme’s professional life saw him become an expert in valuation standards. He was the global chair of the International Valuation Standards Committee between 1993 and 1997. He is a former partner of Ernst & Young’s New Zealand corporate finance practice, where he was widely recognised as an expert in valuation standards and specialised property valuation. He has international experience of the real estate sector and undertook consulting assignments in Asia, Australia and the Pacific Islands.
When Graeme retired from Ernst & Young he undertook a number of governance roles including being chair of Ngati Whatua o Orakei ‘s corporate arm and Vital Healthcare Properties along with a number of other listed and unlisted entities. Government roles included being appointed to the Bay Of Plenty District Health Board, being a commissioner in the Government Inquiry into Local Government Funding and serving as an Additional Member of the High Court.
Graeme was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2009 for services to the valuation and corporate governance. He was a Life Fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Valuers, an Eminent Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and a Chartered Fellow of the Institute of Directors.
Graeme is an excellent example of the all-round character that we seek to develop here at the College. His life and career are a testament to the power of passion, hard work, and dedication to serve those around him. Graeme’s legacy is an example to others and will continue to inspire future generations of Scots Collegians for years to come.
